Blind Filter Basket

How do you clean a coffee machine?

The coffee group needs a thorough cleaning each day to prevent the coffee machine from malfunctioning. If group cleaning is neglected the electro valve can get blocked in extreme circumstances. If not performed frequently a build-up of burnt coffee sugars will contaminate the flavour with a better taste. Burnt coffee sugars carbonize on the shower screen, group gasket, portafilter, and filter basket.

How often should backflush your coffee machine?

Backflushing needs to be performed daily for commercial machines and once a week for home machines.

What is backflushing?

Backflushing occurs when the coffee button is turned off and the Cafiza Cleaning Powder is ejected through the coffee group and solenoid valve and into the drip tray or water waste. The act of turning off the pressurized water forces the solution into the group and electro valve and into the waste tray. Once hot water meets with Cafiza E16 Cleaning Tablet the solution expands. This expansion and pressure combined with Cafiza E31 Cleaning ingredients is what removes the burnt coffee sugars.

  • Pop off your existing filter basket and replace it with a blind filter basket -  Crowbar Filter Basket Remover is a handy basket removable tool.
  • Typically 1 -3 grams of coffee cleaning powder or tables are inserted into the blind filter.
  • The coffee button is activated - water goes into the basket, activating the Puly Caff Cleaning Powder - the solution and swirls around the basket and the shower screen for 10 sec approx. When water is turned off, the pressurized solution is ejected from the blind filter basket and travels through the electro-solenoid valve and into the drip tray or waste pipe. The 1st back flush softens the burnt coffee, with the discharge looking white, the 2nd backflush loosens the coffee further and the discharge should turn brown - by the time the 5 back flush is reached, the discharge will be almost black.
  • Backflushing is then repeated with any solution - 5 more times until all the cleaning solution is gone.

What is the difference between a rubber cleaning disc and a steel blind filter basket?

  • Blind Rubber Filter 50mm can fit into almost all filter baskets and blocks the cleaning solution from escaping. The main advantage is the disc is cheap and fits most baskets, but can get lost as it small and light.
  • A Blind Filter basket 58mm is made from stainless steel and will last longer than the coffee machine, fits almost all commercial and E61 coffee machines. Sage/Breville Back Flush Cleaning Disc 54mm is used with Sage Breville machines and fits into the portafilter baskets well.
