Water level probes come in many sizes and are used to keep the water in the boiler approximately 2/3 full. When the water reaches the probe it will no longer call on the pump to fill the boiler.
This probe is the most common size in commercial espresso machines at 15cm in length - if too long for your model, it can be shortened by raising the probe eg. if 2cm too long raise the probe 2cm above the tightening nut. Home machines tend to use 120mm.
You may need to replace this probe if:
If your boiler is flooding during the day - Mineral build-up on the probe may reduce the conductivity, causing the probe to malfunction.
Corrosion may cause the probe to shrink, raising the water level in the boiler and reducing the steam.
Water is coming out of the steam wand instead of steam - indicating the water level is too high.
