What is the difference between a Conical burr and a flat coffee blade?
Grinder blades or burrs grind the coffee beans to consistent-sized particles.
Flat blades have smaller teeth that grind the coffee beans into finer particles. Flat burrs work a bit differently since they spin at higher speeds for even consistent particles and are easier to adjust the grind
Conical burrs have a cone-shaped inner burr that spins where the outer burr is held stationary. Conic burrs are found in hand grinders and high-end high-performance grinders. With a conical burr, there will be some variation, very tiny particles that are called “fines” can occur with conic blades. Typically, it’s easier to dial in espresso shots with a conic burr, and calibration and alignment by the user are usually not required
How to clean coffee grinder blades?
To get the best from your blades, they need cleaning.
Which are better grinder blades - Original manufacturer or generic?
Original blades are the best coffee grinder blades, in our opinion. Yes, they are more expensive, but they last longer. Replacing the blades is tricky so the less this is done the better - Buy original - is always better.
Our best OEM original Mazzer blades such as Mazzer Kony Original Blades 191C are used in both Mazzer and Niche coffee grinders. Mazzer Mazzer Super Jolly Original Blades 233M now have 233M geometry to offer even better results. The Mazzer Mini A grinds 18g for espresso (light-medium beans) in 7 seconds with the newly designed 233M burrs.
Eureka offers both Eureka Mignon Flat Blades OEM 50mm and the newer wider Eureka Mignon Blades OEM 55mm MAC55ITAv1802 for Mignon Brew Pro, Mignon Design, and Specialilta. Eureka Eureka Olympus Titanium Flat blades 75mm typical life is 2000kg of coffee compared to the standard 400 kg of coffee with regular stainless steel blades.
Fiorenzato Grinder F64 EVO blades red speed Life Span lasts even longer at 5000kg plus, this really matters in a busy environment, not only less maintenance downtime but consistent particle size for longer. Red speed coating will ensure blades keep sharp longer. They are 30% harder than blades with titanium coating and have 40% less friction which keeps the blade temperature stable, improving grind size consistency.
How do I clean the grinding chamber?
You can clean it with just a brush, or preferably even a vacuum cleaner or dry cloth. Never use water or other products such as cleaners or abrasives.
How do I keep the burrs parallel over time?
The parallel flush-set burrs are factory-guaranteed, as long as the burrs are replaced with original Mazzer burrs and the burr holders have not been knocked or damaged. For this reason, we recommend that you never overtighten the burr-securing screws, to avoid having to use hammers or screwdrivers to remove them at a later date. If these tools are used, they can cause the burr holders to incline, in turn compromising the correct final parallel positions of the burrs. The burrs and grinding chamber must be kept clean and it is necessary to ensure that the burr holder that the burr rests on, is fully cleaned.
Do I need to break in or season the new grinder burrs?
You may have to adjust the grind as the new blades will produce finer coffee particles. Generally, new burrs do not need to be “broken in” as they are ready for use.
When I try to grind I get no coffee - what do I do?
This is a common problem - especially when the room temperature or humidity changes suddenly. Motor works - slight humming - but no coffee. The coffee is now too fine and the blades cannot move.
To solve jammed grinder burr blades - adjust the burr anti-clockwise on most grinders, to make the coffee coarser - usually turning the ring nut 2 numbers towards the coarser grind setting, until the flow is regularised. Then proceed to find the correct grind size. If the problem persists, you may have to hover the fine clumps blocking the blades and chute.
