This is a second, shower screen - for dry coffee pucks and reducing channelling.
It is stainless steel and 1.7mm thick, for a slower extraction and is designed to reduce channelling and more even balanced extraction.
This second coffee puck lower shower screen or contact screen is placed directly on the coffee puck, after tamping, and suits naked portafilters. It helps avoid channelling, minimizes puck disturbance, and keeps the shower screen clean.

Features:
Distributes water evenly across the puck and eliminates channelling.
Keeps shower screens clean - no build-up of coffee debris (ideal for nanotech shower screens that do not like strong detergents)
Cools down coffee - if group temperature water is too high - (if the temp is ok - warm the screen 1st)
Size Options: Check the width of your basket - just in case, as manufacturers often make different size baskets.
58.5mm 22 grams
57.3mm 17 grams
53 mm 16 grams
50.5 mm 16 grams
Material: 100um filtration SUS 316 stainless steel - Thickness: 1.7mm.
1.Fill portafilter with ground coffee, use WDT , leveller and tamper to prepare the puck
2.Insert this shower screen onto the prepared puck.
3.Make espresso ..
4.Remove screen before banging the puck out in the knock box.
5.Rinse under tap and clean with coffee cleaner such as Puly caff or Urnex
As this screen is dense - you should warm up 1st by inserting into portafilter, and make a shot (without coffee in the basket) prior to use. If group temp is 94 °C - this wafer will drop temp by 1-2 °C , if not cooled - this suits 100% arabica coffees - that like 88-92 °C temperatures.

This screen is helping me on the quest towards the perfect espresso, as it slightly lowers the water temperature from the group head on my Fracino Piccino, so the grinds are not getting overheated. There's a noticeable difference in the flavour, as it tastes less burnt. This screen also keeps the group much cleaner and the puck taps out perfectly from the portafilter every time now. It is a bit fiddly to pick out the screen after brewing, but worth it overall!
What is the difference between this thick puck screen and the other thin screen ?
Blue Star Coffee Replies:
Hi Joe, Because this puck screen is dense, it will cool the extraction temperature by 1-2 °C. This suits some machines where you cannot control the group temperature, for easy-to-burn 100% Arabica coffees.
